7.4 Quake in Indonesia-Tsunami warning issued!!!

According to Yahoo! News:
A tsunami alert was issued after an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck 140 miles south of Banda Aceh in Sumatra, Indonesia, the country's quake agency and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Sunday.

"A destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data," the USGS said.

"However there is the possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter."

Chris Brown to headline Haiti benefit concert.

Chris Brown will headline and host a benefit concert in Virginia next month.

"Virginia Stand Up! A Call to Action" will be held May 15 at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Performers will include Trey Songz, Keri Hilson, T-Pain, Mario and Ryan Leslie.

The 20-year-old R&B singer said in a statement Monday he wanted to personally contribute to the Haitian relief effort and support an organization that helps people in his home state. Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross and the Central Virginia Foodbank.

Shakira visits Haiti, plans to build school

According to Yahoo! News Hip-shaking Colombian pop star Shakira is meeting with Haitian earthquake survivors living in makeshift camps and she says she is searching for suitable land to build a school for needy children.

Arriving Sunday, the singer waved to onlookers and greeted infants living on a Haitian golf course that has turned into a sprawling makeshift camp for 50,000 quake survivors.

Her Barefoot foundation provides nutrition to more than 6,000 children in Colombia, and she is member of the ALAS foundation that advocates for children across Latin America.

Shakira was greeted by actor Sean Penn, who is providing humanitarian aid at Haitian refugee camps. The two stars spoke about challenges confronting Haiti since the Jan. 12 disaster.

Stars support Haiti once more with the SOS telethon.

Celebs came out in full force to support Haiti at BET’s “SOS Save Ourselves: Help for Haiti” telethon which was held Friday Feb. 5th at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. Reportedly the event was spearheaded by Queen Latifah, Diddy and Pharrell who had the support of many stars including Common, Monica, Chris Brown, Wyclef Jean, Debra Lee and more.

The event started of with Haiti's most popular entertainer Wyclef Jean. He was joined by several Haitian artists for his song "Hold On" originally featuring Mavado.

Hope for Haiti Now Raises 61 Million and is #1 on iTunes

The "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon has so far raised $61 million and the album featuring performances from the event is on sale on iTunes and Amazon and already boasts a #1 single in Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris' cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."

According to Rolling Stone:

Friday night’s “Hope For Haiti Now” telethon raised more than $61 million for the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck then average of 24 million people watched the entire two-hour special, while an astounding 83 million total U.S. viewers tuned in at various points of the telecast and an additional 5.8 million streamed the special online.the performance that has drawn the most charity downloads on iTunes internationally has been Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris’ duet on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” In fact, as of press time, JT’s “Hallelujah” continues to top U.S. iTunes Top Singles chart, beating out Taylor Swift’s “Today Was a Fairytale”; it’s also the lone “Hope For Haiti Now” performance on the iTunes Top 10 songs chart. The entire Hope For Haiti Now album currently sits at Number One on iTunes’ Albums Chart, and is all but guaranteed the top spot on tomorrow’s Billboard 200 chart. According to Reuters, organizers will continue to collect money from “Hope For Haiti Now” for the next six months.

Trina wants to adopt a Haitian child

Miami rapper Trina (Katrina Tayor) says she is giving serious consideration to adopting a Haitian child. I know she has Dominican roots (as in la Republica) but she also says in the statement that she has Haitian relatives, so I guess the situation is hitting very close to home for her.



In an official statement on the subject, she says:

“With the current state that Haiti is in right now, I personally feel like donating monetary and physical possessions is an enormous and vast donation; however, I would like to contribute on a higher level for more personal reasons like being ready to raise/nurture a child and by being involved on a day to day basis,” Trina states.

“The tragic and untimely list of events that have happened in Haiti–even before the recent “Earthquake”–have made me realize how blessed I am as an individual. I want to share that with a child who is a victim in this disturbing time, in addition to adding on to my immediate family circle.”

“I am in the financial position to adopt, therefore, I am taking it into deep consideration at this time. I have always admired other individuals for adopting children not so much for their celebrity status, but more so because of the nurturing and invaluable change and joy it will bring to a child’s life.”

“Lastly, the fact that I am considering adopting a child from Haiti is even more significant to me because a great deal of adopted children come into the United States from larger countries–like China, Russia and African countries. I also have family members that are of Haitian descent.”

"Hope for Haiti Now" telethon raises $57 million

The two-hour "Hope For Haiti" telethon aired Friday night on the major networks and dozens of other channels, including MTV, Bravo, and PBS, and was also streamed live online. I personally watched on MySpace. Stars like Brad Pitt, Beyonce, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Reese Witherspoon, Steven Spielberg, George Clooney reached out to viewers to encourage donations for Haiti, following a Jan. 12 earthquake that killed an estimated 200,000 people.

It started off with Alicia Keys singing "Prelude to a Kiss." I don't know how she held in the emotion because I could tell that she was ready to cry. She even tweeted about that. Some persons have said the event was melancholic and sad but that is what you need in a telethon. You play the saddest songs, retell the saddest stories and show the saddest images so that even someone in maximum security prison will want to share some of his (or her:-) commissary. I loved Coldplay's performance as well as Justin Timberlake's. And Sting. Wow! Oh he made that guitar wail and on top of that he was backed by The Roots! Oh yes I'm in musical heaven. Beyonce's performace of "Halo" was moving and of course Jennifer Hudson delivered with "Let It Be." Wyclef brought in a bit of Haitian Rara music in his performance of "Rivers of Babylon/Yele." Bono, Jay-Z and Rihanna's performance was good, not a waw but I was kinda bewildered why she could not cover herself up for this event. There is a time and place for everything and that was not a moment to make a fashion statement. Just sayin'.

Apart from the performances you had a lot of celebs on the phones taking calls. Haitian actors Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon and Jimmy Jean-Louis were present. We heard Reese Witherspoon and Taylor Swift take calls. And others spoke directly to viewers including Bill Clinton, Mohammed Ali (through a note read by Chris Rock), and George Clooney who spearheaded the entire event.

We also got glimpses of personal stories of people affected by the earthquake. It was so cute seeing Anderson Cooper trying to speak French. Overall I was touched by the event and I am sure many, many, people around the globe are as well.

The $57 million total released Saturday, includes money raised by phone, text and the Web. It does not include donations by corporations or via iTunes, where people are able to buy performances of the event for 99 cents each, or the entire album for $7.99. Those funds also go to Haiti relief.

The "Hope for Haiti Now" CD is the biggest one-day pre-order in the site's history and the new song "Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour)" by Jay-Z, Rihanna, Bono and the Edge, debuted during the telethon, is the No. 1 single on iTunes.

People can donate via text, phone or through the "Hope for Haiti" Web site for the next six months. Among the organizations who will receive funds from the telethon include Oxfam America, UNICEF, and the Clinton-Bush Haiti Foundation.

6.1 magnitude aftershock sends Haitians running in fear!

The most powerful aftershock yet struck Haiti on Wednesday, shaking more rubble from damaged buildings and sending screaming people running into the streets eight days after the country's capital was devastated by an apocalyptic quake.

The magnitude-6.1 temblor did not appear to cause major new damage in a city already nearly flattened by the Jan. 12 quake, but aid workers said it complicated rescue efforts and Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said the government was sending teams to check on the situation in Petit-Goave, near the epicenter.

"We know they are going to need some help," he said.

At least one woman died of a heart attack, according to Eddy Thomas, a private undertaker.

"She had a heart condition, and the new quake finished her," he said while pushing her body along the street on a mobile stretcher.

Wails of terror rose from frightened survivors as the earth shuddered at 6:03 a.m. U.S. soldiers and tent city refugees alike raced for open ground, and clouds of dust rose in the capital.

The quake began as a slow vibration and then intensified into side-to-side shaking that lasted about eight seconds in Haiti's capital. Some in Port-au-Prince said the far stronger Jan. 12 quake seemed to last for 30 seconds.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Wednesday's quake was centered about 35 miles (60 kilometers) west-southwest of Port-au-Prince and 6.2 miles (9.9 kilometers) below the surface — a little further from the capital than last week's epicenter was.

Former Haitian dictator, Baby Doc pledges aid to Haiti

Jean-Claude Duvalier, known as “Baby Doc”, who lives in exile in Paris, emailed a reporter to say he wanted to donate money.

He said that he would officially ask the Foundation set up in the name of his late mother, Simone Ovide Duvalier, to transfer the $8 million (£5 million) to the American Red Cross for relief work.




Mr duvalier, whose regime was a byword for brutality and corruption, said: “It is with great horror and a profound emotion, but also with a very great concern, that I have monitored the murderous and devastating consequences of the terrible earthquake that has so piteously struck our country.

FRANCE SPEEDS UP HAITI'S DEBT CANCELLATION

France’s Finance Minister says she has asked creditors of earthquake-ravaged Haiti to speed up plans to cancel its debt.
Christine Lagarde says she “made contact with all Paris Club members so we accelerate the cancellation of the government of Haiti’s debt”.
France is president of the Paris Club of creditor nations, an informal group of industrialised countries.
Lagarde said Friday she is also asking non-members Venezuela and Taiwan, who are owed significant amounts by Haiti, to help in debt reduction.

COUNTRIES RELAX IMMIGRATION RESTRICTIONS ON HAITIANS

Caribbean
Two Caribbean countries Friday relaxed the visa requirements for Haitians entering their countries as the region continued to react to the powerful earthquake that hit the French speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country on Tuesday.
National Security and Immigration, Charles Savarin announced Thursday that government had taken a decision to extend the stay of all Haitians already on island by an additional six months until the situation in Haiti stabilizes.

United States
The Obama administration extended a special immigration status on Friday to Haitians living illegally in the United States that protects them from deportation for 18 months and allows them to work here.

Canada

The government is fast-tracking an estimated 5,000 immigration applications to reunite families in Canada with relatives "directly and significantly affected by the earthquake in Haiti."
The move is part of a special program in the wake of the disaster that's gripping the Caribbean nation.
It was announced on Saturday at a news conference in Ottawa attended by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and numerous government ministers, including Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.
The government also announced that deportation orders against about 1,500 failed Haitian refugee claimants remain suspended. And extensions, without fees, will be granted to several hundred Haitians in Canada on temporary student, visitor, work or tourists visas.

It's enough having to worry about your loved ones at this time. So it is a relief that at least immigration problems can be put on hold for a moment at least.

Wyclef defends Yele Haiti charity

37-year od Haitian-born rapper Wyclef Jean spoke out Saturday in defense of his foundation Yele Haiti after charity screening groups raised concerns about its accounting practices. According to audits of tax returns, the foundations has paid several of his businesses for services.

Having recently returned stateside from Haiti where he was on the ground helping in the relief efforts, Jean said he is "disgusted" by attacks "on my integrity and my foundation." He says he will be going to Haiti every three or four days. I think that Wyclef is being sincere and he makes sense. He basically mentions cost of production for show as comprising some of his expenses. In fact he has donated a million of his own money to Haiti.


The foundation, also known as Yele Haiti, intends to airlift medical supplies, water and Clif Bars to Haiti using a FedEx plane early next week, according to foundation president Hugh Locke.

The Haiti earthquake has already triggered hundreds of thousands of donations to musician Wyclef Jean's charitable foundation, which expects to raise upwards of $1 million a day in the disaster's wake. However, Internal Revenue Service records show the group has a lackluster history of accounting for its finances, and that the organization has paid the performer and his business partner at least $410,000 for rent, production services, and Jean's appearance at a benefit concert. Though the Wyclef Jean Foundation, which does business as Yele Haiti Foundation, was incorporated 12 years ago--and has been active since that time--the group only first filed tax returns in August 2009. That month, the foundation provided the IRS with returns covering calendar years 2005, 2006, and 2007--the only periods for which it has publicly provided a glimpse at its financial affairs. In 2006, Jean's charity reported contributions of $1 million, the bulk of which came from People magazine in exchange for the first photos of a pregnant Angelina Jolie (the actress reportedly directed that the publication's payment go to Jean's charity, not her personally). As seen on the following pages from the foundation's 2006 tax return, the group paid $31,200 in rent to Platinum Sound, a Manhattan recording studio owned by Jean and Jerry Duplessis, who, like Jean, is a foundation board member. A $31,200 rent payment was also made in 2007 to Platinum Sound. The rent, tax returns assure, "is priced below market value." The recording studio also was paid $100,000 in 2006 for the "musical performance services of Wyclef Jean at a benefit concert." That six-figure payout, the tax return noted, "was substantially less than market value." The return, of course, does not address why Jean needed to be paid to perform at his own charity's fundraiser. But the largest 2006 payout--a whopping $250,000--went to Telemax, S.A., a for-profit Haiti company in which Jean and Duplessis were said to "own a controlling interest." The money covered "pre-purchased...TV airtime and production services" that were part of the foundation's "outreach efforts" in Haiti.

I think that there is a thin line to be drawn when you run a charity and you supply services to that charity. If Wyclef has a studio and is recording ads or songs to promote the charity and "below market value" then is that really so bad??? But what is market value??? A person won't charge Rihanna the same price to record as someone trying to make a demo-it's two different 'markets' here.... Personally this is bad timing for this type of release. People have already started saying they regret giving to Yele Haiti, but come on... How many heads of Charities like Red Cross pay themselves six figures??? Do some research. This is not new. I think overall Wyclef is a good guy and no other Haitian entertainer put Haiti on the map like he has done. I think he will have to address this to assure people that the money is going where it needs to go,but that will have to wait till this current situation calms down. I am sure he is in no frame of mind to do that right now.

Thursday, January 14, 2010 -Miami, FL-Julian Marley and his brother Kymani Marley are confirmed to be the featured performers at MIAMI FOR HAITI , a fundraiser in benefit of the Haitian relief effort being held this Friday, January 15, 2010 at Cafeina in Miami, Florida. Co-hosts of the event include: An Easy Production, Carma Foundation, Cassandra Theramene, Cathy Goodall, Cedella Marley, Corey Ciorciari, Crystal Connor, Hillary Hecktman, Jose Ortiz, Ivette Naranjo, Love Over All Foundation, Marlon Hill, Melky Jean, Todd Michaels and The Workshop.

MIAMI FOR HAITI begins at 7pm and a minimum donation of $20 is required. Each guest will receive a complimentary cocktail courtesy of Gran Sierpe Pisco. 100 percent of the proceeds and donations from the evening will be split between PROJECT MEDISHARE FOR HAITI and THE CARMA FOUNDATION. The venue and all participating artists have agreed to donate their proceeds directly to the foundations. Guests who prefer to make a donation before-hand can do so online and bring their receipt to the door. Guests are also encouraged to bring items such as blankets and clothing to the event as non-perishable donations will also be collected at the venue.



Julian Marley urges, "The devastation that has occurred in Haiti is unimaginable. We must rise to the occasion to help our brothers and sisters in every way possible."



PROJECT MEDISHARE FOR HAITI is dedicated to sharing its human and technical resources with its Haitian partners in the quest to achieve quality healthcare and development services for all. The organization is currently sending doctors and medical supplies to Haiti to help aid the crisis.



THE CARMA FOUNDATION helps to improve the health of the poor and vulnerable women and children of Haiti. The foundation charters boats that bring supplies directly to their teams that are established on the ground in Haiti.

I can't begin to imagine the pain, fear, hopelessness, confusion, loss that persons in Haiti are going through right now... I just want them to know that I am praying for them, that I am spreading the word and that I hope that God will give them light, hope, warmth, comfort, courage through others, through nature, through their will.
