It is March on the International Dateline.

Welcome to Photo of the Day. The POTD thread was started by iGary, and first posted in May, 2006 It was converted to a monthly thread in November 2007 by Arn. POTD is one of the most popular picture groups on MacRumors and often exceeds 500 posts and 20,000 views per month.

Photo of the Day is intended to be a showcase for your best pictures. There is no limit to your gear, just your imagination. P&S and film cameras are welcome along with DSLRs. There are no themes like the Fortnightly Challenge and Weekly Contest. No winners (or losers) either.

    Policies

*One Photo per Day - Don't post multiple images in one message.

*Quote with Thumbnails - If you quote an image that has tags, convert them to [timg] tags before replying. This will post your comment with a thumbnail and save space. Failure to [timg] in quotes is still a problem at this time. Help fix that.

*Multi-Quote - To comment on several photos, click the Multi-Quote button. This puts all your comments in one post. The Moderators like that. Observe the [timg] policy here, too (especially).

*SFW (Safe for Work) only - This is a site - wide rule. If you wouldn't show it in a public place, then it's NSFW (not safe for work). Think before you post.

Optional - Describe your photo.Tell what it is and where you took it. If you know the EXIF data of a photo, include it. The following EXIF fields are recommended: Camera; ISO; Focal Length; Shutter/Aperture; Lens.

If you need any help with posting, try one of these tutorials.

It's all fun and games until someone wakes up with a dead horse head in their bed.

But seriously... $9.99 to $12.99 movie downloads when I can go over to any store (like, oh, say, Wal-Mart) and buy the real deal for a buck or two more? Just how in God's name is this a threat to them?! Wal-Mart's smartest move would be to drop their DVD prices by that buck or two, until they cost the SAME or LESS than online downloads.

not factoring in the gas to get there. maybe drop it 5 bucks to copensate lol

    If you try going to:

    www.apple.com/movies

it gives you a page that says:

    403 Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /movies on this server.

    Does this mean anything?

    Nope; been there for years.

I'll wager that Apple didn't use Comic Sans  in their reply note.

I always interpreted it as a handwritten note. I guess we won't know unless the guy post a photo of the actual note (if it in fact exists)...

I find it very disturbing that an adult man would have to ask his wife for permission to buy an iPad, much less return one because she said "No."

C'mon. Has nobody ever done something, only to have someone close to them (like a spouse, a sibling, a friend, ...) call them out on it to say "Hey, you know, given your current situation, maybe that wasn't a wise move"? Has nobody ever taken such advice, thought on it, then concluded "You know what, my friend is right"? Or is everyone truly hung up on this attitude of "I'M the only one who knows what's best for me, so stay outta my face"?

Whoever said that was hard to understand? Not me!

This is a big problem (and has been for 30+ years)...that everything we buy in the USA is made somewhere else...USA no longer manufactures except for our junky USA cars.

Sure...at some point when this all started decades ago, it WAS cheaper to build certain things outside the US...but then everyone got on the bandwagon and now it's the norm. (Thanks politicians!)

The "it's cheaper to build outside the US!" is a bogus argument and has become an evil of our own doing.

If it costs X to build in the US, please don't tell me it costs 1/10th of X to build, import, pay taxes, blah blah blah, to get it back into your company's hands.

We can all agree that some things, yes, are easier and/or cheaper to build outside the US for a variety of reasons. Our USA system needs some serious overhauls to get stuff to be built back in the US other than screws and toilet paper.

You are still not getting it. It does cost a fraction to build things outside the US.

The US minimum wage is $8.25 per hour in many states. The minimum wage in a country like the Philippines is about $0.71.

Because of labor unions and their regulations, a manufacturer typically needs to pay significantly above minimum wage anyway, PLUS benefits like health insurance cost way more. In the Philippines (which I bring up because I employ people there) health care cost about $10 per worker per month. Here in the US it can cost several hundred.

Payroll taxes are no picnic either. Typically, in the US the total cost of hiring a worker when you factor in payroll, admin, benefits, etc. is that worker's salary + 25%.

Labor is one of the biggest expenses any company has. Manufacturing requires a lot of labor too. You need people to operate machines, fix machines, load products, even assemble certain items by hand in some cases.

So you can easily do the math. Where in one country you can get people for a dollar an hour to work and in other you get them for $10-$12 an hour, clearly the cost to operate in expensive country is 10x as much. That means you have to raise your prices that much more.

Now all total manufacturing expenses aren't 10x more, since raw materials will typically cost the same anywhere in the world and there are some overhead expenses as well, but that labor difference is still huge when you consider a company like FoxConn that has 920,000 employees.

Moving to the US would mean they would effectively have labor costs as if they were hiring 10 million employees instead of 1 million. You can't say that wouldn't make them raise their prices several fold to compensate for that.

You can run the math yourself based on their number of employees, average wages in China, average wages in the US and their profit margins.

Anyone who thinks it costs the same or only slightly more to produce here is living in a dream world.

HAHAHA, i'm guessing Gates never had his way with the ladies ;)

I have the sneaking suspicion Gates didn't have much trouble with the ladies... considering while most people were offering drinks, he was offering weekend trysts to remote islands off the cost of Fiji.

Or better yet, he could just offer the entire island.

So which is it? The Apple page has to be considered official, but the MacRumors article would get me a brand new battery. :p

Good question. The FAQ you've linked to quotes:

While the actual recall site, https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/ (which is linked from the FAQ site) quotes:

You all crack me up at least, thanks for the chuckles!

Conditional thievery is just something people do in order to justify whatever they are doing unlawfully. Downloading and cracking the Adobe suite? HIGH FIVE! Breaking into a car dealership and driving off with a car you didn't pay for? NO of course not! Because 'that's different' when it isn't. A company offers a product/service and you are using it/taking it without compensation for that item. Digital or physical it's the same thing.

In fact you may have some games that I don't own maybe I'll swing by later and take them from you free of charge. Of course you wouldn't be upset with that because hey it's only fair right?

And I know all the usual arguments "It's just a digital copy no one loses anything" and "Cars cost a lot more and you'd get arrested" The "Man" owes me, other people are idiots so I should have the right to be one too and on and on.

Humans are the only species capable of believing the lies we tell ourselves.

    my point exactly...

I really don't get all the wankers here with all there high morals about downloading is steeling. It aint steeling, and if it was i wouldn't feel one single bit of guilt...i'm getting robed here everyday by the government, at work, hell i'm even getting robed buying grocery's...why should i be the idiot paying for something i can get for free...and don't start the "people are losing their jobs if you don't buy it" if they do than they should get in line. Here's an idea... maybe the CEO's could spare a few of their billions to help the staff out and make them keep their job...

People don't care about Flash Player itself, they just want the ability to play video in the browser, which the iPhone is perfectly capable of doing. So instead of lobbying Apple for Flash support we should be lobbying web developers for video tag support.

Exactly! And not only video video tag support but the whole HTML5. Much faster and cleaner and ready to replace this flash crap. Good thing Apple is so large that they can actually transform whole markets.

Just goes to show that what Apple says about how much faster stuff is a load of bull. How come the MBP is 39% faster and the MB only 25%. Theyre the same chips at the same speeds arent they?

What im trying to say is the MB should be 39% faster than the previous one right?

No, the claim for the MBP is for 2.16GHz Core Duo v 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo so there is an increase in clock speed as well as the change in chip.

For the MB they don't get an increase in clock speed hence the lower claimed speed increase.

Was the one more thing at the iPod event last October the TV shows?

If so, the one more thing this year could be the Movies.

I don't think there was a "One More Thing..." from what I remember there were three acts:

Act I - New iMac with iSight and Front Row/Photo Booth
Act II - iPod and iTunes, sales, nano's resounding (1 million in 17 days) sales.
Act III - iPod (with video), TV Shows in iTunes, iTunes 6.

it was a rhetorical question is response to MacFly123 and Knightlie's arguments that apple only follows open standards, which still allow them to create a media rich website using only open standards, that QuickTime is not.

on a lighter note: this is one of my fav flash sites (http://www.onemotion.com/flash/spider/). as you can tell, it's built only with HTML, javascript and CSS :p
