Perhaps not for that purpose, but one wonders what Apple could do with part of the 700MHz spectrum...

How decent is it for streaming video? With Slingbox rumored to be working on an iPhone and iPod Touch client, perhaps Apple is looking at streaming rentals to those devices for when you find yourself stuck in an airport because of a delayed flight. Make a great ad tie-in:

"There is something in the air, but it's not you because of snow at O'Hare. So why not catch the new episode of '(insert show name here)' while you wait for the next update at the gate?"

Apple didn't bid for the wireless spectrum. The list of bidders is public information. So they can't do anything with spectrum they don't own.

Can you point out any war in history that meets your ivory tower qualifications?

I've always felt that WW2 was justified though the way we ended the war was unfortunate and un-necessary.

I'm also generally in support of intervening to stop genocide/ethnic cleansing.

    Unnecessary Wars:

    Revolutionary
    War 1812
    Civil War
    Spanish American War
    WW1
    Korean War
    Vietnam War
Desert Storm (Iraq 1.0) maybe necessary but easily avoided
    Afghanistan
    Iraq War

Its nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with a large portion growing up in single parent families that don't teach their children anything about being respectful human beings. I don't buy that racism causes this. It's their choice whether to remain a family after conceiving a child, money has little to do with it.

While for me, $500 is a "pretty big wad of cash to throw down", there's more to it than strictly looking at the dollar figure. EG. Do you have a kid or kids that might benefit from being able to use the new iPad you're about to purchase? Do you have legitimate uses for it that go along with EARNING more money, or maybe even the ability to write the whole purchase off as a tax deduction the next year? When you spend $20 on some beer or a few bucks on some food, it's a consumable you use once and throw some trash away, and then you have nothing to show for it.

One thing I know about myself is, I'm very hesitant to spend much on "instant gratification" type of entertainment. I practically never spend money on tickets for sporting events or concerts, and maybe buy a movie ticket once a year. I've often skipped summer vacations completely because my employer didn't want me to take time off when they had important projects going on, and I just opted to get paid for the days instead. I don't even have cable or satellite TV at home, because I hated watching $60 or more per month just vanish into thin air, with nothing concrete to show for it later. So when I do spend my money? It tends to be on bigger-ticket items I know I'll get a lot of use out of for years down the road.

So frankly, in my relationships, "respect" is just as much about my partner respecting my ability to make sensible purchasing decisions and NOT demand I consult with her first, simply because it's something a lot more expensive than a fast food order.

Great post, completely agree, and am also inline with your mentality about spending money. The same people who ask me why the hell I would spent $1700 on a laptop when I can get one for $700 (I have a Macbook Pro, which I use several hours EVERY SINGLE DAY, will last years, and which I work and make money from) are the same people who would spend that difference in a month on stupid ****, eating out, and alcohol, with nothing to show for it. I have no problem spending more on long term purchases to get a better product, or something I'm passionate about which will bring me pleasure for a long time.

Fortune reports (http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/22/technology/apple_beatles_ipod.fortune/index.htm?postversion=2006112708) that Apple may be close to bringing the Beatles music catalog online exclusively through iTunes.

Other music stores such as MSN and Rhapsody have reportedly courted the Beatles over the years, but with little success. David Munns, head of EMI North America, was recently cited as saying that the Beatles would be available online "soon".

The details of the deal are still being worked out, according to the article:

As Fortune went to press, numerous deal points were still being hammered out. According to a music industry executive apprised of the talks, the parties were discussing how lengthy a window of exclusivity iTunes might get and how many tens of millions of dollars Jobs - who is said to be personally involved in the discussions - will commit to an advance for the band and marketing costs.

If a deal is established, this would be interesting conclusion to a history of legal disputes between Apple Computer and Apple Corps (Beatles company). The most recent outcome (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/05/20060508075122.shtml) favored Apple Computer's use of the Apple logo in association with the iTunes store.

I think most of the blame lies with Motorola. Think of it this way, they have not even given Apple a processor that is fully DDRAM compatible (let alone enought speed bumps). Its a hash up system at the moment. I think when we get a full DDRAM G4 + the speed bump we need in Janaury the systems will get the performance needed.

    Games.

The vast majority of their sales are to less-technology/gadget-savvy users who have bought their Mac because of other people telling them that Macs are good, rather than the hardware, specs, or software on the computer.

In the end, it is all marketing... which is the case with most of Apple's products.

They have been selling PC hardware now for years at a higher price than their competitors.

Windows 7 isn't any worse (or better) than MacOS for browsing the web or checking email.....

so its not the OS that is influencing soccer moms and emo kids to buy Mac either.

It is the 'cool' factor, IMO

I like your 'games' point but not so sure about your other claims.
Did you mean that Windows buyers ARE more techno-savvy?
Or that Techno-Savvy types tend to avoid Macs?

    Higher Prices for Better Machines.
Fantastic designs are not cheap. And Apple never skimps on Components
Quality Windows PCs cost about the Same as Macs but don't have iLife.

You think a Mom or kid wouldn't think the Mac OS is more attractive and easier to use?

You say "People telling them Macs are good" but are not clear why they do tell them that. Are Macs really good or is "All marketing"?

    'Cool'
What does that mean? Is it just another word for 'Trendy'?
How did Macs get to be cool or trendy?
I always defined cool as 'being comfortable being yourself'

Finally, why does every switcher I meet have the same expression on their face. They all look relieved, like we have just pulled them into the life boat.

Cool may get you to buy something but it can't make you LOVE something.
So why do Mac users LOVE their machines so much?
If you own one I don't really have to explain.

I would guess that if they bump the iPhone's camera there is some other benefit since Apple generally doesn't play the specs game. Is 8MP enough for decent 1080p video?

    I didn't think Steve Jobs rated 1080p?

Has he not said that 720p is good enough for everyone in his opinion?

Not of itself no - but imo a remastered collection will sell millions. How many fans, old and new, will shell out again to hear them?
    really? I am skeptical.
Unless like I said a whole package with a very attractive price. Hopefully with a bitrate better than 128.

Well, you are already paying for color-screen, video-playback, photo-playback etc. etc. etc.. They seem to be adding features constantly, yet the price does not go up (more or less).Well, since I never liked, or considered buying, a "regular" iPod you're only half-right... colour-screen is just normal development, I guess, probably not much more expensive than monochrome ones, in large quantity... video and games are still not available on the nanos, and hopefully won't be for a long long while, so that is for the buyers of the "regulars" to pay... and photo was developed for the regular iPods, and even if I don't really need or want it, it probably was fairly cheap, too... :)

If you wanted a barebones iPod, you would always have the ShuffleI have my mini, and if I'm to replace that (and not just get a new battery when the time comes) it will probably be with one of the new nanos, which - even with the added photo-playback - is still fairy basic... ;)

I thought I would say why I am excited about this news. You can all say it's got nothing to do with megapixels and your right, a jump from 5 to 8 is hardly front page news worthy, all of Canons decent compacts use very nice 10 to 12 megapixel backlit sensors.
I'm excited because the Exmoor R Sony sensor has been hailed as a great device, because of it's lens and it's backlit CMOS. That's why I want it, I'm in way a professional photographer like the large majority of mobile phone owners. You want a camera on your phone that can take great pics when you have the time to frame and so on every shot, but also a device you can whip out and take very quick shots with. But you want it in a phone to save carrying another device as you always have your phone.

Because of this, moving to Sony is the best news yet as it will give users like me what I want that I think the current iPhone lacks. I would also like to see scene selections as well.

If I wanted to take care with photographs and wanted great shots every single time I would buy a beginners SLR.

And a note to Apple, considering the shake you can get holding a phone, is it really that hard to put a dedicated hardware camera button on the side? And move the flash away from the sensor and make it more powerful please?

Heres a review of the Xperia Arc's camera, and this is on early software for the phone too:

Meh -- there was similar consternation with the original Mac, LaserWriter and PageMaker from the professional printers. And as then, it still is at the end of the day just a tool. The real talent is in how the tool is wielded.
I'll take it a step farther. How many people have access to a pen and paper? How many people write professionally for a living?

The really disrupting thing to 'established' professionals is that they have tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars tied up in their gear and when there are sudden drops in the price of gear that means their investment takes a dump as well. In the grand scheme of things it's inevitable but that doesn't mean anyone likes it when it happens.

Eh, you misunderstood me. The main point I was making is that the wife should not be able to prevent such a purchase IF THEY CAN AFFORD IT. In many cases, money itself is not an issue in such a purchase, as the wife would not blink twice in spending that amount on something SHE wants. My point was that sometimes they refuse things simply because they dont see it benefitting THEM- and that is something selfish, and shows a lack of respect. Of course if the guy is blowing $$ on an iPad when they're having trouble putting food on the table, thats an issue. My post wasnt centered on these cases. It made the assumption that it could comfortably be afforded, but which the wife doesnt see the value in it for herself, which is the sole reason of the refusal or the demand that it be returned. And Ive seen this on many, many occasions. I know this guy that brings in 6 figures a yr, yes his wife (who brings in nothing) controls the bank account. The guy has no balls, his wife dictates the purchases, buys whatever the hell she pleases, and gets upset when he spends on anything without consulting her. She doesnt let him buy **** he wants, the cost of which is a drop in the bucket compared to the income he makes, simply because SHE doesnt see the value in it. But like I said, the guy has no balls and takes it, while she spends thousands on shoes, etc without needing to consult him.But hey, some people love that ****. Sometimes you need to do things that give you individual pleasure in a marriage, not always 'pleasure as a unit'.

Just don't forget that the concept of selfishness goes both ways.

Its not always the wife is trying to be controlling and wants things only for herself. Its often that the wife is trying to plan for a furture, as someone else mentioned. I just think that is should be a give and take, and honestly, if my husband came home after spending $500 on anything, without consulting me, I'd be fairly upset. Unless he spent like $500 on a suitcase that had $100k in it... well I think i'd get over it. But now, that ain't never happening.

Its not about asking permission, it is about making decisions together that effect your overall well being. $500 is alot of money to alot of people. And if $500 isn't alot, then no, you wouldn't have to ask. But just because you can still put food on the table, even if you buy that ipad, that is still not a good reason to not discuss the purchase with your significant other. It may not be taking food out of your mouth today, but it could be used for something more productive in the future. Your wife/husband may already be thinking along those lines... which is why you should discuss a $500 purchase with them.

But this is just my humble opinion. Not saying it is appropriate for everyone, but this is the respect I think I deserve in my marriage.

And just for further insight, I am the sole breadwinner in my house, and it still took me 4 months, multiple discussions with my husband (in which he always encouraged me to buy it), and the ability to justify it as a learning tool for my son in order to buy my iPad... and food stayed on my table the whole time.

    :)

I really don't see any MB or MBP updates. Again, I could be off, but I don't see those until later this year.

I'm sure the C2D chips coming out on all sorts of Windows laptops may be putting some pressure on Apple to update their laptop line, but I think it's still too soon.

It might be too soon for you, but Apple will lose sales if they stick with yonah.
