Blizzard has scrapped its Real ID system.
Announced earlier this month, the system aimed to curb rule-breaking by showing real names instead of anonymous usernames on its forums.
Users said that the idea was an invasion of privacy and could lead to online scams, and responded by posting information about Blizzard employees found using their real names.
Co-founder Mike Morhaime has since announced that the firm has listened to user feedback and will not implement the scheme.
"We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums," he said.
"It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums. Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games."
However, the scheme will still be optional for in-game chat in World Of Warcraft and StarCraft II, which the publisher believes will be a "powerful communications" tool for players.
StarCraft II launches on PC on July 27.
