The image in question is the shocking scene that provided the evening's (and the series') big holy-s***-f*** moment, the nightmare-inducing sex scene between the once-gentlemanly vampire Bill Compton and his vampire maker Lorena. I'll try and describe the scene in words, but really, it's a you-had-to-be-there moment. Here goes:
Lorena once again drives home the fact that Bill will never be able to love a human again without ruining their lives, and that his hanging on to his humanity is a weakness. Bill gets upset, and apparently when vampires get upset they also get aroused. So he forces himself upon her, which she loves 'cuz she's dirty like that, rips off her clothes and proceeds to hump away frontside-to-frontside. Okay, so that's pretty tame. But here's where it gets interesting. Bill, in a screaming rage, grabs Lorena's head and begins to twist. Not in an "I'm a rough chiropractor" way, but in a "I'm going to tear this bitch's head off" kind of way. And he turns. And turns. And turns, until her head is a full 180 degrees twisted, facing the bedroom floor from the edge of the bed. Now, vampires need more than just a little spine readjustment to die, so she's still alive, blood dripping from her mouth. And the kicker? She gurgles, "William, I still love you." Bill screams, and we do too.
While most people seem to have enjoyed the scene for what it is—pure outrageousness—other have gotten more upset. I think we can all agree that it is one of the sickest things we've ever seen on television. But some people, myself included, love that stuff. Those who didn't likely gasped or spit their tea out.
The point is, that scene was SOOOOO True Blood. It's shocking, twisted (pun intended!), and in some weirdly perverse way... sexy. True Blood is all about taking risks and pushing the envelope. Without that sense of daring and fun, True Blood is just another entry in the overbloated vampire genre.
