Apple is now facing a competitor in the tablet market after Samsung released its own tablet computer Thursday, September 2 in Berlin, Germany at the IFA electronics fair.
The Galaxy Tab will try to compete with the popular iPad. The new gadget measures at 7.4 x 4.7 x 0.47 inches while the multi-touch touch screen is at 7 inches, making it smaller than the Apple counterpart. It weighs at 380 grams and comes at two variations, the 16GB and the 32GB. It will run using Android 2.2 operating system. It has a 512 memory and some things that the iPad lack: a micro-SD slot, multitasking OS and a camera (3 MP).
The tablet will be sold via partner carriers. Its price range will be from $200 – $300, though it may still vary depending on the chosen carrier. It will be released first in Italy sometime mid-September. A fourth quarter target is seen for the United States.
Even with consideration of this new entry, iPad is still expected to control 75% of the tablet market by the end of the year. Around 3 million units have already been sold by its 80th day of release sometime last June.
