Garriott is a British-American video game developer and entrepreneur, known as his alter egos Lord British in Ultima and General British in Tabula Rasa.

A figure in the video game industry, Garriott originally a game designer and programmer and now engages in various aspects of computer game development and business.

On 28 September 2007, Space Adventures announced that Garriott would fly to the International Space Station in October 2008 as the sixth space tourist, reportedly paying US$30 million.

During his spaceflight, Garriott took part in several education outreached efforts.

He is an Amateur Radio Operator (callsign W5KWQ) and during his stay on the International Space Station (ISS), he communicated with students and other Amateur Radio operators using Amateur Radio.

Garriott also transmitted photographs using the ARISS SSTV amateur radio syatem.

Garriott also worked with the Windows on Earth project, which provides an interactive, virtual view of earth as seen from ISS.

Garriott used the Windows on Earth software to assist in the selection of locations on Earth to photograph and the public were able to use the same online tool to track the ISS and see the view he was experiencing out an ISS window.

His photographs, along with images taken by his Astronaut father Owen Garriott in 1973, will be available to the public through Windows on Earth, adding a personel element to studies of Earth and how Earth has changed over time.

He is the first affspring of an American Astronaut to go into space and the second person to wear the British Union flag in space.

Garriott became the ninth inductee into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame in 2006.

Served on the crew of STS-44, that successfully deployed a defense support program (DSP) satellite.

In addition, the crew conducted two military man-in-space earth observation experiments, three radiation-monitoring experiments and numerous life sciences experiments in support of long duration space flights.

Served as a mission specialist on the crew of STS-54.

The six-day mission featured the deployment of a NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-F) and carried the Diffuse X-Ray Spectrometer (DXS) in the payload bay.

This astronomical instrument designed to expand the knowledge of stellar evolution scanned the local vicinity of our Milky Way galaxy and recorded the low-energy X-Ray emanations believed to originate from the plasma remnants of an ancient supernova.

In what was called the "Physics of Toys", which has since become popular children's education video, the crew also demonstrated how everyday toys behave in space to an interactive audience of elementary school students across The United States.

Served as a mission specialist on the crew of STS-77, which carried a number of technology development experiments as well as a suite of a microgravity science experiments.

The technology development experiments included two deployable satellites both of which he deployed.

For the deployment of the Spartan/Inflatable Antenna Experiment, Mario was The Remote Manipulator System (Robotic Arm) operator.

The other deployable was a small Satellite Test Unit (STU), Which used residual atmospheric drag and the Earth's magnetic field for attitude control and stabilization.

He also filmed some additional Physics of Toys scenes for a sequel to the original educational video and subsequently made several appearances on the children's television show Sesame Street.

His first space flight abroad Skylab in 1973 set a new world record for duration of approximately 60 days, more than double the previous record.

Extensive experimental studies of our sun, of earth resources and in various life sciences relating to human adaptation to weightlessness were made.

His second space flight was abroad Spacelab-1 in 1983, a multidisciplinary and international mission of 10 days.

Over 70 separate experiments in six different disciplines were conducted, primarily to demonstrate the suitability of spacelab for research in all these areas.

He operates the world's first amateur radio station from space,W5LFL, which has since expanded into an important activity on dozens of Shuttle Flights, Space Station MIR and now The International Space Station, with scores of Astronauts and Cosmonauts participating.

UK Chart Roundup: Cheryl Cole Proves That Amateur Hour Is A Hit With The Kids

After Cheryl Cole triumphantly mimed 90% of her single "Promise This" on the The X Factor last week—an act that was exceptionally classy because at one point the words were still coming over the speakers while she was already using her hands to cover her mouth during an extremely intricate bit of choreography—the High Priestess Of British Soul has debuted at #1 on the UK chart. Spectacular!

This marks Cheryl's second chart topper in her home country. "Fight For This Love" reached #1 at the end of October last year.

Moving on to far classier broads, Joe McElderry's "Ambitions" slips down two positions to #23 in its third week on the singles chart, while the awesome collection of pop choons that is his debut album Wide Awake debuts on the LP roundup at #3. Holiding Joe off from the top of the chart is Kings Of Leon's Come Around Sundown, which is #1 for a second week. At #2 is Michael Buble's Crazy Love—an album that is now over a year old.

Oh, Joe. Can his career be saved from a Leon Jackson-like doom? Guess it all hinges on how far down Wide Awake slips next week.

Shayne Ward Gives "No Promises" To Miss World

The Miss World competition went down in Sanya, China yesterday, and some broad from Kentucky named Alexandria Mills won. More importantly, Shayne Ward performed his 2006 hit "No Promises" at the event.



Ah—that's an oldie but a goodie. Let's hope Miss World got to wrap her thong around Shayne's head and ride him like it was the Kentucky Derby.

Ward's new single "Gotta Be Somebody" (watch the video) is out a week from today (November 7), and his third album Obsession follows on November 15.

MTV films has just released the trailer to Justin Bieber‘s movie “Never Say Never.”

Justin Bieber is about to star in a 3D film about himself directed by Step Up 3D director Jon Chu.
The film is produced by MTV Films and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is set to be released in North America on February 2011.

"Heartbreak Down" sounds like the standout from all three of these. It actually seems like it could be a better jam than "Raise Your Glass."

Project Runway Season 8 Finale: Andy & Mondo Out While Gretchen Wins

Thanks to the technological miracle known as a DVR, I was easily able to zip through Thursday night's Part 2 of the Season Finale of Project Runway, while eating lunch today.

It was a 2 hour long Part 2 Season Finale.

It started with the Final 3 of Mondo, Gretchen and Lizard Man, I mean, Andy, sitting around talking about how amazing it is that they were where they were.

While staying true to their "design aesthetic."

I really have grown tired of that "design aesthetic" phrase.

Back at their domicile a note is found telling the Final 3 they will be meeting some old friends. It occurred to none of them that the old friends would be the cut designers.

What followed was a reunion, of sorts, that was sort of amusing. Then the Final 3 came out and we suffered through montages of their journey to stay true to their design aesthetics.

Finally it was back in the workroom.

And then to the Runway. Where Jessica Simpson was the Guest Judge. I figured we'd get some classic Jessica Simpson dumb comments. As I often am, I was wrong.

Andy showed off his design aesthetic first. Gone was his embarrassing bikini. It all looked blah to me.

Then Gretchen showed off her design aesthetic. It did not look as blah as Andy's. But where is it women were those short shorts on some of Gretchen's models?

And then it was Mondo. All dressed up in a suit. Mondo's design aesthetic was quite clear. It is good? I have no idea. Sort of entertaining to look at.

And then it was time for the Judges to chat. They quickly agreed that Andy was out.

After making the quick Andy decision there was a lot of arguing about the design aesthetics of Gretchen and Mondo, with Nina Garcia and Michael Kors thinking Gretchen has a feel for the pulse of current trends and fashion, while Mondo has a feel for the pulse of circus attire.

But, Heidi Klum and Jessica really liked Mondo's circus wear, both wanting to wear Mondo's polka dot dress.

Jessica was actually quite bright. At one point, when it was Andy being discussed, with Heidi, Nina and Michael agreeing that Andy had toned down, way too far, the design aesthetic that made him stand out, to which Jessica asked, "Did you guys scare him into scaling it back?" Or something like that.

Finally the arguing was over. Cut to commercial. Andy is quickly cut. We may have cut to another commercial. Hard to remember with DVR fast forwarding.

Heidi praised both Gretchen and Mondo and told them it was the longest deliberation in Project Runway history. And then told Gretchen she was the winner of Project Runway.

Mondo took his shocking defeat well. Very classy little guy. I thought he was the for sure winner.

Taylor Swift Addresses Jake Gyllenhaal Dating Rumors on Ellen Degeneres Show

Taylor Swift opens up about her rumored “new” boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal on Friday’s Ellen DeGeneres Show, which will air on Monday (November 1).

When DeGeneres asked if she is optimistic about love right now, the 20-year-old country singer said "I'm always optimistic about love...always, sometimes."

"Especially if your boyfriend is Jake Gyllenhaal, because he is very handsome. Y’all are just hanging out though right?" the host added.

"You have a picture of us on the screen, don't you?" Swift responded.

Swift and Gyllenaal sparked dating speculations after they were spotted spending some quality time together in New York last weekend.

The Scariest Night of my Life...

...Okay. That might be a bit of an exaggeration.

Or maybe not. I was pretty scared.

But in the spirit of Halloween, I thought I'd share with my Blog readers the "funny little trick" that was played on me last year around this time.

It really doesn't take much to scare me. I'm a 'fraidy cat. After seeing Paranormal Activity last year, my friends didn't find it all that scary, while I had to sleep with a light on for weeks. In fact, I sleep most nights with the hall light on now, because my over-active imagination conjures up all kinds of spooks and freaks to haunt me when I can't fall asleep.

Last year, though, I was going through an "old-school scary movie" phase, and I was re-visiting the Scream series that was so popular during my high school days. I found all three of the Scream movies on DVD and watched them leading up to Halloween. I also told my roomies, friends, and anyone else who would listen just how much I DETESTED the Scream mask, and how creeped out I was by it. Even seeing it hanging in the stores gave me the heebie-jeebies.

Anyways... after watching one of the Scream movies with Sarah, Susie and Brenda, we all got ready to go out to Gavan's. We hung out all evening, dancing, playing pool, and drinking, then I decided to go ahead home. Sarah kept telling me to stay, that they'd all be leaving in about half an hour anyways, but I insisted I was tired and wanted to go. Because we only had one key amongst the roommates, Sarah tried to "scare tactic" me into staying. "There's only one key, if you go home now, you have to go to bed and leave the front door open so we can get in! You'll get scared!!"

Nah, wouldn't be a problem. I assured her I was tired enough that it wouldn't matter, I would fall asleep no problem.

So she gave me the key, and I walked up the street to our place alone. It was dark and windy; the shadows on houses and buildings from the street lights were creeping me out, and the branches on trees were swaying, hitting rooves, while dead leaves skittered down the sidewalk, making an eerie soundtrack for my walk home.

I walked quickly, I admit it, with a few glances over my shoulder to make sure no one was following me. (Paranoia...I have it!)

When I got home, I left the front door unlocked for Sue and Sarah, and trudged upstairs to my room. There was a mess of clothes on the floor, and some more stuff on my bed. I went to pull my comforter down on my bed, and realized there was a silky black something lying there that wasn't mine.

I picked it up. Turned it over in my hand.

And the Scream face stared back at me.

Awesome.

I rolled my eyes, sure it was just a joke that Sarah or Sue had played on me, and tossed it out into the hallway, slamming the door behind me. I sat down on my bed, heart pounding, trying to rationalize. Of course it was Sarah or Sue who had left it there, right?

Of course it was.

...oh, but what if it wasn't?

The mere thought had me leaping off my bed, skirting past the mask lying on the hall carpet, racing down the stairs, and flying out the front door. I ran all the way back down to Gavan's, wind whipping the branches, dead leaves rustling everywhere, and every shadow a possible killer, lurking, waiting for me...

I was huffin' and puffin' pretty good when I walked back into the bar, and everyone looked at me, a little surprised to see me back, and to see me so red and sweaty and distressed.

"Who put the damned Scream mask on my bed?"

Sarah literally cracked up. She had put it there, hoping to scare me before we left, but I didn't find it then. She had actually forgotten she'd left it there, and hadn't intended to scare me like that.

The perfect Halloween prank. And a night I'll never forget!

The Two Big Reasons Katy Perry's "Firework" Video Makes Total Sense

I didn't really get why Katy Perry's label went with "Firework" as a third single of her latest album at first. Especially given that it was following up "Teenage Dream," a song that, despite my reservations about Katy herself, I'm still quite addicted to.

"Firework" just seemed to be missing something—the sense of urgency "Teenage Dream" possesses. Or the ability to stick around in your head after you've heard it. Or a certain Max Martin-ness.

But now, after seeing the song's music video, it all makes perfect sense. Katy Perry shoots fireworks out of her tits and saves dying children and makes fat girls go swimming and gay boys kiss.

She's like an ambassador of unity. Or at least her cans are. Stunning. And thank god she reminded us she has that pair. Because she doesn't rely on them to compensate for her vocals nearly enough in her career.

A brand new Ke$ha track off upcoming album Cannibal (out November 22) was made available on iTunes overseas, and I'm actually beside myself and in tears at how beautiful and soulful she sounds here. It's like a choir of angels has descended from heaven and is blessing all of our ears with gentle kisses (with tongue, of course).

Mariah Carey is Pregnant

It's been talked about for months now, and finally Mariah Carey has come clean: She's pregnant! "Yes, we are pregnant. This is true," Carey, 41, said on the Today show Thursday morning as part of a sneak peek at a three-part Access Hollywood interview. "It's been a long journey. It's been tough because I've been trying to hold on to a shred of privacy." Husband Nick Cannon, 30, joined the interview to talk about the "absolutely emotional" news, adding, "The greatest gift on earth is a child." Carey, who also told of a miscarriage two years ago, would not reveal her due date.

So Ridley Scott is apparently done meeting with potential leads for his upcoming "Alien" prequel and surprise, surprise, the list of names in contention for the part is still the same as it has been for the past little while: Noomi Rapace, Carey Mulligan, Abbie Cornish and Natalie Portman. However it appears one more name, and pretty obvious one, is now in the mix. Olivia Wilde, riding in a wave of advance buzz, mostly from geeks going gaga over her form fitting getup in "Tron: Legacy," is apparently another name being bandied about to kill some aliens.

Paula Abdul Dance Reality Show “Live To Dance” Premiering January 4, 2011

Paul Abdul, the former American Idol judge, is the lead judge on a new CBS’ reality-competition series titled Live to Dance.

According to CBS, Paula Abdul will serve as the executive producer, mentor and lead expert.  She will be joined by host Andrew Gunsberg, who is known as the co-host of Australian Idol. The other two judges on the panel are choreographer/director Travis Payne (from Michael Jackson’s This Is It) and singer/dancer Kimberly Wyatt from the Pussycat Dolls.

The dance competition, which will give its winner $500,000 grand prize, is scheduled to debut with a special two hour episode on Tuesday, January 4 (8:00-10:00 PM), before moving to its regular Wednesday 8-9 PM time period the following night, Jan. 5.

Miley Cyrus' parents, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, have filed for divorce after 17 years of marriage!

Billy Ray and Tish announced that they are divorcing in a joint statement Wednesday, "As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family. We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers."

The former couple, who have five children including pop teen star Miley Cyrus, filed divorce papers on Wednesday (October 27) in Tennessee, citing irreconcilable differences.

Pink's "Raise Your Glass" Becomes Her 10th U.S. Top 10 Single

Pink has every right to knock one (or three) back herself this week, as her Greatest Hits...So Far!!! single "Raise Your Glass" climbs up one position to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and becomes her 10th American Top 10 hit (not counting that abomination that was "We Are The World 25," which I've stated before makes me want to swallow glass).

"Raise Your Glass" is also her highest-charting U.S. hit since "So What" reached #1 back in September 2008. (Stick with Max Martin, girl!) And I have to say, this jam is a total grower. I wasn't completely smitten with it at first, but hearing it on the radio over the past couple of weeks has proven to be a pleasant surprise each time. Good on ya, Pink. Looking forward to the greatest hits (out November 15) finding a permanent home in my car next month.

Elsewhere, Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP's international dance hit "We No Speak Americano" climbs up to #29, Shakira's "Loca" jumps up 52 spots to #32 (thus giving British rapper Dizzee Rascal his first American hit) and Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" debuts at #78.

On a final note, Natasha Bedingfield goes in at #95 with new single "Strip Me." Jesus. This song, "Babies"—what is it with these repressed religious girls?

Survivor Nicaragua: Marty Throws His Hidden Immunity Idol Away, But Not To Jill

No, that is not Marty throwing away his Hidden Immunity Idol. That came later in Wednesday night's Episode 7 of Survivor Nicaragua.

Marty and Jill knew they were in trouble. Fellow old-timer, Jane, had defected to the kids, who collectively out-numbered Marty and Jill.

Sash plotted with a pair of the kids and then offered Marty a deal. If he'd give Sash his Hidden Immunity Idol, Sash would protect Marty and they'd vote out Jill.

Marty did not do much contemplating before agreeing to throw Jill under the bus. I mean, off the tribe.

I did not understand the logic of Marty's move.

And, am I just remembering wrong, but was it not Marty and Jill, together, who found that Hidden Immunity Idol after Jill got the clue?

Why did Marty not simply tell Sash he was going to use his Hidden Immunity Idol, that night, to guarantee making it to the merge? And tell Sash that he was willing to vote Jill out. I think Sash and his crew of kids would have been too dumb to think that Marty might double-cross them by not using the Idol. And instead give it to Jill.

Which is what Marty should have done. If the kids didn't throw any votes Marty's way, Marty and Jill's two votes could have gotten rid of Sash. That would have made for some good TV.

Survivor Nicaragua is not being as entertaining as the two most recent Survivors, those being the Samoa ones with Russell Hantz providing good entertainment.

Mariah Carey Confirms Pregnancy

Mariah Carey has finally confirmed that she and husband Nick Cannon are expecting their first child!

After months of speculation, the 41-year-old singer made the announcement that she is pregnant on The Today Show Thursday morning, saying “Yes, we are pregnant. this is true. It’s been a long journey. It’s been tough because I’ve been trying to hold on to a shred of privacy.”

During a sneak peek of Mariah's Access Hollywood three-part interview with Billy Bush, the singer revealed that she had miscarried nearly two years ago. "It kind of shook us both and took us into a place that was really dark and difficult. When that happened... I wasn't able to even talk to anybody about it. That was not easy."

Mariah said she is due in spring but refused to reveal the exact date.

Husband Nick Cannon, who wed Mariah in 2008, added: "The greatest gift on earth is a child. We’ve had names picked out from the first day we met and we want to stay true to that”.
