Lady Gaga's New Single Out In February, Album Out In May (Her Ass, However, Is Right Now)

So here's Lady Gaga's big New Year's Eve revelation—a photo of her, presumably by Nick Knight, shoving what looks like a leopard print umbrella up her naked budissy, and announcing (via Twitter) that her new single will be out February 13, 2011 while her new album will be out May 23, 2011.

Like I said before, hardly worth tearing myself away from Angry Birds for.

Happy New Year—And Adios, 2010

Sitting at Pittsburgh International Airport, listening to Paul McCartney & Wings' "Jet" on repeat (the irony of which I didn't get until I just typed that sentence out) and getting ready to depart after a week visiting back home.

The above photo is one I took of the Andy Warhol Museum on Tuesday while driving (don't try that at home, chyldryn). Anyway, I have no year-end wisdom for this last post of 2010, so I'll just sign off noting that sometimes randomness and unplanned vacations can be the ones that are most memorable.

Somehow I'm flying back with new copies of Franz Kafka's The Castle (??) and Bret Easton Ellis' Imperial Bedrooms (despite swearing BEE off after reading Glamorama). Saw The Nutcracker. Met up with friends from college who introduced me to a hipster dive bar called The Brillobox, and even bumped into the guy who talked me out of buying Rick Astley's Whenever You Need Somebody on CD in 1994/introduced me to Electronic's "Disappointed" there. Got drunk. I had to do my first pull-over so someone could open up the car door and puke. Downloaded Duran Duran's new album with an iTunes gift card (thanks, Mom). Watched the first two full episodes of The Ed Sullivan Show that The Beatles appeared on. Spent quality time catching up with Moogaboo. And I drove around all week while playing Robyn, Goldfrapp, Alphabeat and Daft Punk.

Anyway, 2010—it was a year. Thanks for reading throughout the past 12 months, and for reading in general. Have a safe and happy New Year, and catch you in January 2011 (in other words, well, tomorrow).

Ryan Phillippe Is 'Very Happy' for Reese Witherspoon

Ryan Phillippe has no hard feelings about his ex-wife's engagement. On Thursday, the actor offered his congratulations to Reese Witherspoon, who is newly engaged to Hollywood agent Jim Toth. "I'm very happy for both Reese and Jim," the actor, who was married to Witherspoon for seven years before they split in 2008, tells the New York Daily News in a statement. "I wish nothing but the best for the mother of my children." Phillippe, 36, and Witherspoon, 34, have two children together, Ava, 11, and Deacon, 7.

Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" Might Actually Be Up There With Her 'Blackout' Trash

So, the two things that gays and fans of all things pop (same thing, really) are looking forward to: Lady Gaga's "big" announcement tomorrow night and the premiere of Britney Spears' new song "Hold It Against Me" a week later, on January 7.

The program director for New York's Z100 radio station told Entertainment Weekly this trash:
"It’s produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin, and the beat that they give her is really unique compared to other artists — this infectious bass beat beneath the song.”
Well, let's face it—Britney's masterpiece was her 2007 album Blackout, which she made when she was cracked out of her gourd. (Her upcoming album is due out in March 2011.) If "Hold It Against Me" is half as classy "Radar" or "Break The Ice", then it might be worth it.

It's a post-Gaga world, and expectations are high. I don't think all that lip-sycing shit's gonna fly too well this time around, so hopefully Britney's tuned her robot pipes.

US Chart Roundup: Enrique Iglesias Keeps F***in' His Way Up The Ladder

It's strange to think that "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" is only the fifth Top 10 U.S. hit for Enrique Iglesias since he first experienced mainstream pop crossover in 1999, but here we are. The single (naughty version: "Tonight (I'm Fuckin' You)") jumps from last week's position of #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 to #7, and gives the hot piece of Latin tail his second American smash in a row, following the #4-charting "I Like It."

So does it matter that Enrique had to totally sell his soul to the gods of Slutwave and basically become a male Ke$ha to start having hits again? Well, probably, but who's paying attention, anyway?

Meanwhile, Bruno Mars' "Grenade" is the new #1 single, after selling 559,000 downloads last week. Guess a lot of angsty kiddies with a pension for heartbreak got iTunes gift cards for Christmas? Billboard notes that "Grenade" experienced the third biggest sales week in paid digital download history (following records set by Flo Rida's "Right Round" in 2009 and Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" earlier this year.)

And I'll admit, I'm a little disheartened by the drop of Edward Maya's "Stereo Love" from #16 to #22, but maybe things will get sorted out once the holiday season passes.

Until then...

The U.S. Top 10:

1. "Grenade" - Bruno Mars *1 week*
2. "Firework" - Katy Perry
3. "We R Who We R" - Ke$ha
4. "What's My Name" - Rihanna feat. Drake
5. "Raise Your Glass" - Pink
6. "Black And Gold" - Wiz Khalifa
7. "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" - Enrique Iglesias ft. Ludacris & DJ Frank E
8. "Bottoms Up" - Trey Songz feat. Nicki Minaj
9. "The Time (The Dirty Bit)" - The Black Eyed Peas
10. "Just The Way You Are" - Bruno Mars

...And Then Howard Donald Took His Shirt Off

All of the members of Take That (except for Robbie Williamsuh oh!) are in Barbados, where Howard Donald took off his shirt on the beach and—well, who really cares what the rest of them were up to. (Actually, the That are performing a private gig in Barbados on New Year's Eve.)
Progress closed out 2010 by becoming the best-selling LP of the year in the UK (total copies sold: 1.8 million), and the final #1 on the album chart across the pond.

And then Howard took his shirt off.

Earl "Fatha" Hines Known as the Piano Man - Born Today!!

Hines, Earl Kenneth (“Fatha”)
Born: December 28, 1903, in Duquesne, Pennsylvania
Died: April 22, 1983, in Oakland, California
Vocations: Musician, Jazz Pianist, Bandleader
Geographic Connection to Pennsylvania: Duquesne, Allegheny County

Keywords: Louis Armstrong; Lois Deppe; Esquire Silver Award; Jazz Hall of Fame

Abstract: Born on December 28, 1903, in Earl “Fatha” Hines grew up in Duquesne, Pennsylvania. Hines studied to become a jazz musician in high school, and by the time he was 18, his musical career had begun with singer and bandleader Lois Deppe. In 1924 Hines moved to Chicago, where he met many famous jazz musicians including one of his recording partners Louis Armstrong. Most famous for his unique piano-playing style, Hines led several bands, went on many tours, and recorded a large amount of music over the course of his career. Hines died in 1983 from a heart attack. He is fondly remembered as a legend in the jazz music scene.

Biography:

Earl Kenneth “Fatha” Hines was born on December 28, 1903, in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hines. His mother died when he was only three-years-old. Hines was raised by his father and stepmother, Mary. His father worked as a foreman at the coal docks, played the cornet, and led the Eureka Brass Band. His stepmother worked as a church organist. He lived with his extended family consisting of his half-sister, half-brother, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins, many of whom were musically inclined. Hines was briefly married to singer Laura Badge in the early 1920s and then had a common-law wife, singer Kathryn Perry, for many years after. He never had any children from either of them. In 1947 Hines married Janie Moses and had two daughters, Tosca and Janear. They later divorced in 1980.

First wanting to follow in the footsteps of his father the cornetist, Hines changed his focus to the piano instead when he realized that playing the cornet hurt his ears from blowing air into the instrument. His stepmother gave him his first piano lessons, and he learned to read music really well. When he was 14, Hines moved to Pittsburgh to live with his opera-singing aunt and attend Schenley High School in pursuit of majoring in music with the hope of becoming a classical pianist. Here he was exposed to a greater variety of music, including jazz which instantly became his new love. Hines shifted his focus from classical piano to jazz piano. He took private lessons from several teachers who were unable to keep up with his inherent ability to read and play music. At age 15, he created a musical trio with a violinist and a drummer. They played at many school functions, nightclubs, and church socials. His schedule became so busy by the age of 16 that his teachers advised him to drop out of school to better pursue his musical career.

In 1922, at the start of his career, Earl Hines joined the band of Lois B. Deppe, a prominent singer and bandleader in the Pittsburgh area, in his first steady job, earning $15 per week. They were the first black orchestra to have their music played on the radio. While playing with this band, Hines developed his trademark “trumpet-style” piano playing technique. He said the major influence behind his innovative style was trumpeter Joe Smith, a popular musician of the time. Hines’ unique and unmatchable style permitted him to have a long, successful career. This extensive career began when he was only 17 where he made his first recordings with Deppe, which included one original composition. At age 18, Hines left Deppe and created his own band with Benny Carter, a saxophonist. During this year, a well-known pianist of the time, Eubie Blake, encouraged Hines to move to Chicago, which was the hot-spot for jazz talent.

Earl Hines took Blake’s advice, and in 1924, he packed his belongings and moved to Chicago, Illinois. There he began playing in Carroll Dickerson’s orchestra at the Entertainer’s Club in 1925. After touring for nine months with Dickerson’s ensemble, he returned to Chicago. Teaming up with famed trumpeter Louis Armstrong and drummer Zutty Singleton, he formed a musical trio which played regularly at the Cafe Sunset, a club frequented by gangsters. Unfortunately the club closed, the trio broke up and Hines joined clarinetist Jimmy Noone’s band at the Apex Club. In 1928, he made records with Noone’s band, solo recordings, and tracks with Louis Armstrong. Armstrong and Hines created some of the most renowned records in jazz, including the famous trumpet and piano duet, “Weather Bird.” Hines’ best solo recording was his original “A Monday Date.”

Later in the year on his birthday, he began to lead his own band at the prestigious Grand Terrace Ballroom in Chicago. He and his band worked seven days a week, performing three shows a night and eventually began touring two to three months of the year. They were one of the first African-American bands to tour the South during the 1930s. While touring with this band, Hines received his nickname of “Fatha.” Hines offered a drunken announcer some “fatherly” advice about limiting his excessive drinking. The announcer retaliated by introducing him as “Fatha” Hines, and the nickname just stuck with him. The band left the club in 1940 and began making hit recordings together—“Jelly Jelly,” “Boogie-Woogie on the St. Louis Blues,” and “Stormy Monday Blues.” Hines is credited with fostering the careers of many other famous musicians in his band such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Billy Eckstine, to name a few. Hines received Esquire Magazine’s Silver Award in 1944.

In 1946, Hines was injured in an automobile accident and he could not longer tour with his band. Hines’ band split up in 1948 as the interest in big band entertainment was dwindling. Hines reconnected with Louis Armstrong once again, and toured Europe with the Louis Armstrong All-Stars. He left this group in 1951 and led his own band until 1955. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Hines worked a regular job at the Hangover Club in San Francisco, California. After fading from the limelight, Hines was invited to play three solo concerts at the Little Theatre in New York. A rebirth of interest ensued, and Hines’ created more recordings and starred in several international tours. Hines received the great honor of being inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame in 1965.

Throughout the course of his career, Earl Hines strived to improve his already impeccable piano-playing ability. In the later years of his life, he suffered from heart problems and arthritis. Hines played his last show in San Francisco. One week later, Earl Hines died in Oakland, California on April 22, 1983, from a heart attack. Several albums of early recordings and his most popular tracks have been released in his memory since his death. His legacy remains as one of the greatest jazz musicians in history.

Elton John Gets A Son

Finally, Elton John can call himself a father.

The pop rock superstar and his long-time husband, David Furnish, announced to Us Weekly that they have had a child via a surrogate mother in California. Their son, named Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, was born on Christmas day, and weighed seven pounds and 15 ounces.

"We are overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment," the new fathers told the magazine. "Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents."

It's been a long road for John and Furnish in their quest to be fathers; in 2009, they were denied the right to adopt an HIV-positive toddler from the Ukraine, due to John's age and the country's lack of recognition of civil unions rendering him single by their laws.

John said that he still planned to support the child and his brother financially, and now has a son of his own, too. And one with the name Levon, one of John's many well-known songs.

David & Victoria Beckham Moving To New York City?

David & Victoria Beckham and their three boys, who are currently live in Los Angeles, are planning to make a move to New York City and it’s all due to Victoria’s quickly-expanding fashion empire, according to Now! magazine.

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham picture.(Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images)

"My work is so important to me and LA just isn’t a real fashion city," fashion designer Victoria reportedly told a friend.

"Her friendship group in LA has disbanded and David was traveling a lot more than she’d anticipated and so was she. It just seemed to make sense for her to be based in fashion capital New York. It’s closer to London and Europe for her business meetings." said the source.

However, the family will keep their Beverly Hills home because David is still under contract with LA Galaxy.

"David’s used to flying a lot but this will be the first time he’s been permanently based so far from his team. If he has a few games in a row, he’ll stay in Los Angeles." the source added.

"This isn’t a decision they’ve come to lightly. They still like LA and have no plans to sell their home there but being based in Hollywood doesn’t appeal to them anymore and they feel it’s time for a change."
